Caring for cotton knit

cool water, dried flat.

Our cotton yarn is soft and breathable. A hand-knitted cotton bag keeps its shape for years when it's washed gently and always dried flat.

Care topics

Carrying

Cotton knit gives a little to what you carry. Keep laptops and bottles for another bag, and empty it at the end of the day.

Knit stretches under weight and does not always spring back.

  1. Keep heavy things like laptops and bottles for another bag.
  2. Spread the weight and carry it by both handles.
  3. Empty it at the end of the day.
  4. Let it rest flat or filled with paper overnight.

Cleaning

Blot marks with a soft cloth and a drop of mild soap in cool water. Never rub: it raises the fibre.

Test the soap on an inside seam first.

  1. Mix a drop of mild soap into cool water.
  2. Dip a soft cloth and wring it well.
  3. Dab the mark from the outside in. Never rub.
  4. Rinse the spot with a clean damp cloth.
  5. Lay it flat to dry.

Washing

By hand, up to 30 °C, with a mild wool or delicates detergent. Soak for ten minutes, rinse, then press the water out in a towel.

Hand wash only, up to 30 °C. A washing machine stretches and felts the knit.

  1. Fill a basin with cool water, up to 30 °C, and a little wool or delicates detergent.
  2. Turn the bag inside out and soak it for ten minutes. Don't rub.
  3. Rinse in clean cool water until it runs clear.
  4. Roll it in a towel and press the water out. Never wring.
  5. Reshape it and dry it flat.

Drying

Always flat on a dry towel, reshaped by hand. No tumble dryer, radiator or direct sun.

Never hang it to dry: wet knit stretches under its own weight.

  1. Lay it flat on a dry towel.
  2. Reshape it by hand: corners, base and handles.
  3. Fill it loosely with paper so it keeps its shape.
  4. Turn it over after a few hours.
  5. Dry it away from radiators and direct sun.

Storing

Folded or filled with paper, lying down. Hanging it by the handles lets the knit stretch under its own weight.

Never store it damp, and never on a hanger.

  1. Make sure it is completely dry.
  2. Fill it with tissue paper or fold it gently.
  3. Put it in its cotton dust bag.
  4. Lay it on a shelf. Never hang it by the handles.

Pilling

Small fibre balls are natural with cotton. Lift them lightly with a fabric comb, along the surface.

Never cut or pull the pills: it opens the knit.

  1. Lay the bag flat on a table.
  2. Hold the knit taut with one hand.
  3. Glide a fabric comb lightly in one direction.
  4. Brush away the loose fibres.
